Feature Walls: Our Do’s and Don’ts

A striking feature wall is one of the most creative ways to reinvigorate the style of your home.

Throughout many of our signature Blackett homes, you’ll often find we have incorporated a feature wall to bring the space to life. However, there is an art to choosing the right wall for your space—and when done well, it will leave you and your guests in complete awe.

If you’re considering the addition of a feature wall in your new home, continue reading to learn about our team’s dos and don’ts.

DO: Choose your wall wisely
It’s important to carefully consider the space to ensure the feature wall will be cohesive with all elements of the space. Ensure your choice is guided by purpose and intent, reflecting the nature of your home. This can be done by using the wall to draw attention to an architectural feature of the home or an existing focal point—for example, a window or a fireplace.

DON’T: Get carried away
In order to avoid distracting or overstimulating the senses, it’s crucial to use feature walls sparingly—generally, one will suffice. A feature wall in each room takes away from the special design element and will often leave you feeling overwhelmed. We also suggest steering away from putting feature walls in smaller rooms as this often makes the space look and feel even smaller.

DO: Play with textures
Increase visual appeal and add personality to your home by experimenting with contrasting textures. Rather than limiting yourself with just paint, consider exploring various materials, patterns and textures that will bring depth and life to the space. Some of our favourite feature walls we’ve worked on to date include Wee Jasper Blue Stone and Thermally Modified Hemlock Timber.

DON’T: Limit yourself
Don’t hesitate to incorporate architectural features and furniture to effortlessly complement your feature wall—a little imagination can go a long way! Of course, it’s important to consider the function of the space and ensure that your wall works within the space not only aesthetically, but practically too.

So, there you have it—our top tips and considerations when incorporating a feature wall in your home.

When you choose to build with Blackett, we’ll introduce you to one of our specialist building designers or architects who will interpret your design brief and achieve your dream design and assist in the process of choosing the right feature wall for your space.
