As part of our total commitment to Occupational Health and Safety, Blackett Homes publicly reports on our OH&S performance for the previous twelve months.

During the last twelve months we have had two minor lost time injuries, these injuries required workers to have four days off work. These incidents were fully investigated and recommendations made to prevent these incidents occurring again. There were no notifiable incidents that had to be reported to ACT Work cover.

We have had three external audits during 2009. Two conducted by the Federal Safety Commission as part of our F.S.C accreditation and one audit as part of our AS/NZS 4801 accreditation. Numerous toolbox talks, site safety inspections and plant & equipment risk assessments were carried out by Blackett Homes management and our external OH&S consultant.

Blackett Homes had on-going discussions with our suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure that they are working safely and that they comply with local work cover requirements. This is done by inspecting safe work method statements, plant & equipment registers, OH&S inductions and ensuring workers have necessary training and licences to carry out their work etc.

We have had numerous OH&S meetings to ensure that our OH&S system is being adhered to and understood. We have prepared detailed site specific safety plans for all of our major sites and a ‘generic’ site safety plan for our individual houses.

We have an ongoing OH&S training program, over the past year the following training has occurred; OH&S induction process, senior first aid, use of fire extinguishers and Certificate IV in Occupational Health & Safety. Our training programme is ongoing.

Our basic OH&S philosophy is ‘zero harm to our entire workforce’.

As Managing Director of Blackett Homes I am committed to improving safety in the construction industry.

Blackett Homes has achieved one of the highest levels of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) compliance in Australia. We are certified to AS/NZS 4801 OHS Management Systems and we are accredited under the Australian Government Building and Construction OHS Accreditation Scheme. As a result our organisation has become more efficient and productive due to better safety outcomes. We have a very strong safety culture which is supported throughout all levels of the organisation.

We continue to deliver:

Safety from the top down

A workplace where unsafe practices are addressed immediately

Business agendas with safety as the top item

Proactive and effective safety committees

Safety induction and training on all sites

A positive ongoing relationship with subcontractors through mentoring, training, support and communication

Appropriate time and resources to manage safety

Risk management strategies that incorporate safe design

Over the last 12 months we have had no lost time injuries. We have instituted a mentoring programme for our sub-contractors. We have also introduced systems to improve our workers health outcomes.

All of the above improvements have given our company the ability to deliver to our client’s homes, built to the highest quality standards and delivered on time and within budget.

At Blackett Homes we promote safety. We also respect the rights of all workers to work in a safe and healthy environment where there is a philosophy of zero harm.

Canberra based builder Blackett Homes were the proud recipients of two awards at the recent 2007 ACT Master Builders Association Awards Gala Event, presented with the awards for;
- Project Home of the Year less than $275,000; and
- Project Homes of the Year more than $275,000.

Sales Manager Rick Meir was delighted with the result. “It’s been a great couple of years for us. Last year we won the Master Builders ACT Home of the Year and the National Residential Builder of the Year Award and we are thrilled to add two more awards to our growing list of achievements” said Rick.

Blackett’s success comes from a commitment in providing great customer service with quality as the cornerstone of all building projects; they are built ‘up’ to a quality, not down to a price. With a 25 year track record of building excellence, it’s no surprise they have won over 30 MBA and HIA awards over the years.

The Blackett Homes “Alfresco Lifestyle Collection” is designed to cater for the most demanding homebuyer, who is not prepared to compromise on lifestyle, yet still demands a home within a realistic budget. All Alfresco homes feature a minimum of four bedrooms, some with studies, rumpus rooms or home theatres, and all with clever designs that seamlessly blend the outdoors with the indoor.

Offering a complete turn key service, the Blackett team provides everything from design consultation, site and planning approvals to demolition and removal of your existing house, right through to final handover of your new home – Blackett Homes will be with you all the way.

For more information on how Blackett Homes can create the perfect home for you, see Rick and the team at their display centre – 8 Encounter Street, Wells Station Harrison, ACT.
